Day 9 - Party

We are cruising now for the next three days so there won’t be too much to report.  Sarah is the first to write the stimulating cruise days.  Alan may add his 2 cents worth in red.

Breakfast was the same as usual, with one minor change in that we discovered that Timo, who was overfeeding Alan his swedish pancakes was no longer in the restaurant where we have breakfast.  Not sure whether he was moved because of Alan but let’s just assume he was.  His replacement only brought Alan 5 crepes instead of his previous 12.  This is probably a good thing. I filled up on fresh pineapple instead. Yum!

After breakfast we retired to the room for a short rest before emerging at midday, with our thinking caps on, for trivia.

Before trivia starts we hear from the captain when we are on sea days and he informs us about where we are, where we are heading, speed etc.  At one point he remarked that in Shanghai the temperature was 5-7 degrees and was wet.  Everyone around us groaned.  I said to Alan, we don’t get to Shanghai for three more days and chances are it won’t be wet when we get there. We know that a lot of people on this cruise are doing the entire 109 days.  What we didn’t realise is that a large number of those people had failed to recognise that a very small part (a week) will be in cold temperatures and they have not packed for that climate. It will be interesting to see what happens when we start getting a little closer and the temperature starts to fall.

Something remarkable happened at trivia … we won the day!  Yes, we were shocked but not as much as the staff seemed to be.  We have a reputation of being not very good. Heather, the assistant cruise director, didn’t believe us when we told her. She was like Really? You guys? One question was about American Football and we are the only two non Americans in our team of 9 and Alan was the only one in our group who knew the answer. All the questions should be about sport. I’d do just fine then.

After our triumphant win, which did nothing in our team rankings unfortunately, we went and joined Dad for lunch. We had to bring forward our swim schedule for the afternoon as the pool area closed from 3.30pm today to set up for the Asian party that was to occur tonight.  We hit the pool at 3pm and unfortunately had to get out at 3.20 but I think Alan had had enough anyway. 15 minutes in the freezing cold pool and then only 5 in the spa. That’s just not right. It was pretty wavy from the ship movement so that was fun.

It then took about 40 people 3 hours to transform the area into an Asian paradise. I sat out there on deck 9 for a while watching everyone setting up the area on deck 8. So much effort and work went into transforming the place. They certainly go all out to entertain the guests on here. It was amazing.  At 6.45pm the crew put on a 20 minute performance of the Mikado.  It has hilarious and very entertaining.  They were also serving Asian canapés but we declined wanting to keep our appetite for the dining room.

After the show, that was where we headed, deciding to stay clear of the Colonnade after the bad service we’d had the night before  We were a little surprised by how quiet it was, later discovering that most people had gone to the Colonnade and had a brilliant night of Asian food. Just our luck. We did have a wonderful meal in The Restaurant though, as we always do. I think it’s impossible to have anything less than perfection in there.

Back on the pool deck there was the largest buffet of desserts and then the band and staff put on a Wok the Boat extravaganza of singing and dancing. Unfortunately, being in such a humid place, the desserts were all covered in goo within seconds of being brought outside. Still edible, though. A great night was had by all. There was tons of guests out there dancing and drinking and having a great time. The staff were only too happy to join in the festivities. Lucky we’re in the middle of the ocean so there are no neighbours to complain about the noise. Unfortunately, the hour we gained a few days ago was taken off us again tonight, so many people stumbled off to bed late.  I guess that means a quiet start will be had tomorrow.
